EMP Full Course Package
Guest speakers Yako 440, Core Rhythm and Baba Israel show the Dubspot students how to remix on the fly with Ableton Live.
DubSpot's Electronic Music Production course goes straight to the heart of what you need to know to create your own music. On the first day of class we listen to the song that has inspired you most, break it down, and help develop the skills needed to create similar tracks of your own. Here theory meets actual practice in our courses tailored for creative souls. With a strong emphasis on hands-on learning and exposure to the latest technology, you dive into music production in an intimate 8-student creative lab. By the end of this course, students should have a finished track. From beginner to advanced, analog to digital, hardware to software....just start making music. This package consists of the first three modules listed below. As an alternative to this package consider EMP Full Package A: Ableton Live. "EMP Full Package A: Ableton Live" is for those who know Ableton is the software they want to use. Or for beginners who are not necessarily too tech savvy and may benefit more by getting a broad overview of the production process from start to finish - with one piece of software. EMP Module 01: Intro to Music Production w/ Reason
Module I begins with the exploration of different genres of music and helps you develop your own personal style. We discuss different approaches to creating your own distinct sound. Next we get into the fundamentals of music production utilizing drum machines, midi, as well as a wide array of synthesizers and effects with an emphasis on Reason 4. At the end of this module students will have finished parts ready for export to other programs. They will learn how to integrate Reason with Ableton using Rewire for live performance. Finally, they will be expected to complete lab assignments and work on developing their production skills through the creation of loops, beats, and chord progressions.Module I also covers:
EMP Module 02: Ableton Live 7
In EMP Module 02, students will learn to listen deeply and identify the elements that go into making great electronic music, while simultaneously mastering the basics of Ableton Live. Students will get hands-on experience creating a good arrangement, without composing and programming the individual elements themselves. By working with existing loops and samples, students will learn the entire process of creating a track without getting bogged down in the details. At the end of this module, students will be solid Ableton Live technicians, and will have completed a simple track by arranging and manipulating sonic material from the DubSpot Library. By completing lab assignments, students will have developed enough skills to begin exploring creative expression and develop their own style. EMP Module 02 also covers:
EMP Module 03: Logic Pro 8
Module III builds upon the skills developed in the previous modules. You learn learn multi-sampling and layering of sounds for a more realistic use of electronic instrumentation and songwriting. We also focus on the power of Logic with it's high quality software instruments and mixing tools. By the end of this module, students will have taken their productions to the highest level of sound quality in a digital environment to be followed by mastering.
